...allows for the automation of multiple attack stages simultaneously. An agent can survey a company's externally accessible resources, check for common weaknesses, and prepare requests for subsequent actions. The share of events flagged by AI—specifically those involving attempts to exploit vulnerabilities—rose from 1.1% to 5.6% over the quarter.
The majority of such requests involve well-known web application attack methods. Approximately 59% of triggered alerts were linked to SQL injection, 24% to path traversal, and another 10% to OS command injection. While AI does not generate fundamentally new hacking techniques, it enables faster scanning of numerous targets and the scaling of existing methods.
Pavlo Parkhomets, Product Manager for PT AF Cloud, highlighted the shift from relatively harmless AI crawlers to tools that increasingly behave like vulnerability scanners. Automation reduces the manual effort required by attackers, making the scanning of large numbers of web resources faster and less costly.
The rise in AI agent activity is occurring against the backdrop of a broader increase in automated attacks on web infrastructure. Scanners continue to search for unpatched systems months after vulnerabilities are disclosed. Within the React and Next.js ecosystem, the number of related events increased 3.2-fold in August compared to July, and 6.3-fold in September. The primary shift lies not merely in the emergence of new hacking methods, but in the increasing autonomy of attacks. AI agents are gradually taking over the tasks of identifying accessible resources, probing for vulnerabilities, and preparing subsequent actions, enabling attackers to target a large number of systems simultaneously. For companies, automated web perimeter scanning has become a constant background threat: an unpatched vulnerability may be repeatedly probed over weeks or months with negligible additional cost to the attacker.
